Today Old Salem Museum & Gardens, Reynolda House Museum of American Art and the Museum of Anthropology at Wake Forest University are participating in the 10th annual Museum Day Live!, presented by Smithsonian magazine. A celebration of culture, learning and the dissemination of knowledge, the event reflects the spirit of the magazine and emulates the free-admission policy of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington, D.C.-based properties. Art House Theater Day celebrates the art house theater and the cultural role it plays in a community. Today more than 195 movie theaters in the U.S. and Canada will be celebrating the joys of independent art house theaters with a day of special screenings, giveaways, promotions and merchandise. >> FIESTA 2016!
Organized by the Hispanic League, FIESTA has become a downtown tradition in Winston-Salem, celebrating its 24th year in 2016. With over 25,000 people attending each year, this is also the biggest fundraiser for the organization with funds going to support cultural, health, education, and college scholarship programs for the Hispanic/Latino community year-round. This is a multicultural event where you can enjoy live Latin music, cultural programs, a children’s area, Latin cuisine, a beer and margarita garden, and local arts and crafts. The Hispanic League is proud to coordinate with USCIS to have the first ever Naturalization Ceremony at a FIESTA event!

>> Barns & BBQ: A Cobblestone Market Farm Tour and Sunday Supper
Take a Sunday drive with a carload of friends or family to explore sustainable farms in the Northwest Piedmont, each with their own unique story and offerings. Tour this special region just outside of the Winston-Salem city limits and talk with the farmers surrounded by the serenity of the land. The 1st Annual Farm Tour will focus on producers in the Tobaccoville area including Billy Place Farm, Fair Share Farm, Harmony Ridge Farms, NOMAD Farms, LLC. Throughout the tour visitors will see pasture raised hogs, heritage poultry, guineas, sheep, turkeys and sustainably grown vegetables and flowers. You will learn about production methods like drip irrigation, fun facts (like how some sheep have hair instead of wool) plus much more! A limited number of tickets remain for the the intimate BBQ Supper that follows the day of tours. For this separate event, you will tour Stauber Farm before settling in for a delicious farm-to-fork BBQ supper crafted by local favorite and local food supporter, Chef John Bobby of Rooster’s: A Noble Grille. Proceeds from the Barns & BBQ Farm Tour and Sunday Supper will benefit Cobblestone’s Food Access Program which works to increase the option of choice in our community by making fresh produce and food available to families on government assistance (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program/EBT and Farmers Market Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children) through a match program.

>> Sowing Seed Children’s Festival
Sowing Seeds Children’s Festival and Food Drive will offer children, families, and friends an opportunity to cultivate the garden of arts and community in Winston-Salem. The event will include children’s performances, interwoven with family friendly acts like Central Library Ladies Music & Movement, Burns & Co Magic and Ventriloquism Show, music with melissa, Terry Schupbach-Gordon Storyteller and Puppeteer, Kids Yoga with Ms Christene, Tam Tam Mandingue & Friends, Contemporary Ballet Co with Juxtaposition Studios, UNCSA Interim Community Music School, and special guests. In addition to Child-Artist vendors sharing and selling their works of art, kids will be able to enjoy making their own arts and crafts, face painting, and play in the bubble station! The following organizations will also be on-hand to spark children’s creativity: Children’s Museum/SciWorks/Peppercorn Theatre, Imagination Installations, Piedmont Environmental Alliance, Kids of Childhood Cancer, Triad Moms on Main, The Story Hatchery, and Hike It Baby of Winston-Salem. Along with a nature area including NC Wildlife Rehab with rescued friends, Yadkin Co Beekeeper Association educating us about the importance of bees with honey tastings, Forsyth Co Gem and Mineral Club sharing a rock collection, and a worm farm!

TOWNIES PICK OF THE WEEK!
Miller’s Variety Store in downtown Winston-Salem is closing its doors after 88 years of service. Eighty-eight YEARS. So much has changed on Trade and in town since Henry J. Miller, Jr. and his wife, Ella Goldstein Miller first opened the store in 1931. With a storied history that includes a visit by the Jackson Five, leading the way in desegregating shopping and a nod by Playboy Magazine, Miller’s Variety Store’s legacy is one for the books – and its presence will certainly be missed.
