>> The Dandelion Photography Project
Dandelions have almost weightless seeds that can be carried long distances by the slightest breeze. They travel all over the world, and bloom where planted.The goal of this thoughtful project is to produce a photography book filled with faces and stories of immigrants. The book will be sold to raise profits for the International Rescue Committee- a charity that provides food, shelter, and medical care for refugees.

Tonight, Martin Garrish & Friends will be in town playing two sets of music as a part of the More Barn concert series. Martin Garrish, a life-long resident of Ocracoke Island, NC, is a master of ‘old time’ country, rock, bluegrass and folk guitar. He has been at the heart of the Ocracoke music scene since he was a teenager and was recently honored with the 2016 Cultural Heritage Award by Ocracoke Preservation Society for his contribution to Ocracoke Island’s history and culture. Silo Bistro & Bar will be onsite with beer and wine for sale.

Tomorrow is the last day to enjoy free s’mores in the back courtyard of Tart Sweets, housed in one of the prettiest historic (former) homes on Fifth. To sweeten the event, the locally owned bakery is debuting their newest product, Dolci Dough! 100% safe to eat, raw cookie dough. Um, yum. Samples, scoops and jars will be available while they last.

Expect lots of Mardi Gras vibes at Raylen this Saturday with music from Cajun zydeco band, Bayou Diesel and delicious New Orleans-style Seafood Gumbo provided by Full Moon Oyster Bar. Ticket purchase includes entry, one bowl of gumbo per person, a slice of king cake and a complimentary glass of wine. Full Moon Oyster Bar will also have char-grilled oysters for purchase. This event is for the 21-and-uppers.

Head to a/perture Saturday afternoon to see I Am Not Your Negro and then stay for a discussion of the James Baldwin book The Fire Next Time hosted by Scuppernong Books. The Fire Next Time, a 1963 book by James Baldwin, contains two essays: “My Dungeon Shook — Letter to my Nephew on the One Hundredth Anniversary of Emancipation,” and “Down At The Cross — Letter from a Region of My Mind.” The first essay, written in the form of a letter to Baldwin’s 14-year-old nephew, discusses the central role of race in American history. The second essay deals with the relations between race and religion, focusing in particular on Baldwin’s experiences with the Christian church as a youth, as well as the Islamic ideas of others in Harlem.
