FRIDAY, AUGUST 12th
@ Reynolda House Museum of American Art
>> Cinema Under the Stars presents Labyrinth
Thirty years ago Jim Henson, George Lucas and David Bowie had a baby – and they called it Labyrinth. Here’s a peek. Tonight you’re invited to head to the front lawn at Reynolda House to see it on the big screen under the starry sky. Bonus points for dressing like your favorite incarnation of the beloved, much-missed Bowie. Gates open at 7:30p for pre-film festivities and the film starts at 8:30p (or dark). Delicious edibles and beverages will be available from Burger Supreme, Gunny Smitty’s Hot Dogs, Taqueria Luciano’s, Patriot Pretzel Co., and Cafe Gelato. Beer and wine will also be for sale. @ Old Salem Museum & Gardens
>> Illuminate Salem
Tonight you’re invited out to Salem Square to celebrate Old Salem’s 250th anniversary. Enjoy the sounds of Bob Moody and Friends followed by an incredible light show that will school you on the story of this historic town. The twenty-minute light show, created by Norman Coates of the Winston-Salem Light Project, will be projected on the Single Brother’s House using photos, video, words, and music and promises to carry you through Salem’s 250-year history in a unique and visually stunning way. Illuminate Salem is free and open to the public, but a donation of non-perishable food items for Sunnyside Ministry is encouraged. Details here.

Heads up! The bell is ringing an hour early. Market opens at 8am to get a jump start on Old Salem’s 250th Anniversary Community Day (more on that below). A few highlights include lots of the last blueberries from Hutchens Family Farm along with a fall honey display; Lavender Anne’s will have their Chaga Chai Tincture, chocked full of antioxidants and warming spices (makes a great addition to coffee or tea!). Experience life as an original Townie this Saturday at Old Salem! As part of their 250th Anniversary celebration we’re all invited to explore this historic gem and its fascinating features for FREE! The Community Day celebration includes: Open buildings for self-guided tours (FREE) / Festive food vendors on Main Street near the Horton Center / Hear music played on the historic 1800 David Tannenberg Organ / Learn about the history of African-Americans in Salem in the St. Philips Heritage Center / Play a historic game of hoops & sticks / Visit the Summer Garden and learn about 18th century daily life, plus loads more. Hitting the cobblestone streets and getting your weekend explorer on sure does work up an appetite. When mid-day hunger (and thirst) strikes, pop over to The Tavern at Old Salem for a special bicentennial celebration. The Tavern is turning 200 and will be serving up great food from Chef Keiper, live tunes from The Reel Shady Band on the patio, a Hoots Roller Bar & Beer Co. beer garden and is handing out North Carolina themed gift baskets on the patio at 3p. As if you needed yet another reason to get your downward dog on at Foothills on Saturday… this weekend the folks that bring you Foothills Yoga(mmunity) have teamed up with Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem, Inc for a special event. Participants are encouraged to bring one (or more!) of the following items as a donation: disinfectant wipes, single-serving snack or breakfast items, and laundry detergent. Organix Juice Bar, Food Freaks of NC, La Vie en Rose – Food truck – Crêpes and French food on wheels + Mike & Mike’s Italian Ices will be on-hand for post-class fueling.

>> Children’s Festival & Lovefeast:
Storytelling, music, games, photo booth, crafts, face painting, pottery, tours of provincial buildings, St. Philips Church and more! This third annual celebration of spiritual renewal will fill the Salem Square this Sunday. Children’s activities kick off at 2p. Bring a picnic to enjoy as you play. Around 4:45p church bells will ring and a Moravian band will play to call everyone to gather in the sanctuary for a special interactive children’s message, complete with little cups and tiny love buns.

@ Fourth Street / Downtown Winston-Salem
>> Second Sundays on Fourth (SSO4):
“We are really interested in downtown development, and we’re also interested in creating a space where people of all kinds can come together and enjoy life together…So crossing racial lines, crossing economic lines, all of those things.” These are the words of Cary Clifford, owner of Camino Bakery on Fourth and the newly opened, Camino at Brookstown (via). She and fellow local business owners from the 300 block of 4th Street are the organizers behind this family friendly event which happens every second Sunday (obvi) of the month through October. Every SSO4 concert features two bands along with local nonprofits and arts organizations. The event also includes a kids’ zone with free bounce houses, games and arts activities. This month’s bands hail from Asheville and include the ragtime-appalachian swing sounds of Carolina Catskins and the rock-soul tunes of Holy Ghost Tent Revival.
